Machine Vision

Challenging automation projects often require machine vision.  DWFritz Automation has the machine vision experience necessary to give you confidence that you will get a robust, reliable system.

DWFritz is a Cognex® Certified Vision Integrator, with the skills and experience to provide the most precise, reliable and efficient vision systems possible. We also utilize other suppliers (Keyence, Basler, etc.) and technologies appropriate for the application, such as laser, confocal, mechanical, and others.

For many applications, machine vision provides the ability to modify inspection or movement criteria without expensive mechanical modifications. For high volume and/or high accuracy processes, machine vision can be the critical key to a successful tool.

  • High Performance. DWFritz has the ability to identify parts, verify position, measure part characteristics, or pick and place parts using simple or sophisticated machine vision. For several projects, we have used machine vision software and hardware to guide robotics to tolerances of less than 1 micron.
  • Low Cost. Not all applications require the most advanced machine vision capabilities. We apply the technology that is most suitable for the application. In many cases, low cost vision tools will meet your needs.

Sub-Pixel Resolution

A pixel is the smallest physical unit in an image.  Images contain many thousand pixels, but rarely do the edges of an object fall exactly on the boundaries of the pixel in the camera.  To increase the image resolution, sub-pixel resolution is used to reliably measure the position of a line, point, or edge in an image with an accuracy that exceeds the nominal pixel resolution of the image.

It works on the basis that a machine vision camera will give a ‘grey’ level value to a pixel that is partially on an edge.  The darker the pixel value, the closer it is to the edge (and vice versa). Sub-pixel accuracy will convert that grey level to a partial pixel value.  If you use the grey scale values of the adjacent pixels in certain mathematical relationships, you increase the sub-pixel resolution significantly.

This is a useful tool for improving the Gage Repeatability and Reproduceability (Gage R&R) of vision inspection systems.

Featured Projects

Ultra Precision Excise and Attach Machine

Ultra Precision Excise and Attach Machine

This system precisely excises small plastic parts from supply reels and attaches them to silicon wafers using a UV curable adhesive. High-performance machine vision and precision motion components enable ultra-precision alignments between the parts and wafer. A robot with a dual wafer gripper automatically moves wafers between the processing table, input cassette, and a UV flood station.
